Learning German Is Easy… Almost – Part 1: Forest Animals

The german word for
Bison = Bison (yep, it’s the same word)
Wolf = Wolf (same again)
Bear = Bär (almost identical)
Fox = Fuchs (not too far off)
Skunk = Stinktier (they didn’t leave any doubt, did they?)
Hedgehog = Igel (I prefer the german word; it’s simpler, easier and it doesn’t twist your tongue)
Deer = Hirsch (um… okay)
Ibex = Steinbock (Not all words are going to be comparable)
Bat = Fledermaus (we’re entering dangerous territory now)
Squirrel = Eichhörnchen (pronunciation has left the chat)

  7. Hysterical, Frank! But I must say, “fledermaus,” which I presume means “flying mouse,” makes WAY more sense than “bat,” the same word we use for the club employed in a baseball game. And oh, club, the same word we employ for a dancing venue and a suit of cards. Go figure, English. “Fuchs” could get me in trouble, but I think I’m going to start saying fledermausen from now on.

  11. Das ist gut fur me. I am a dumkopf when it comes to German a language I love. I speak English and Latvian fluently and tried to learn German twice. What got me was the der, die, and das. I hope you have a good Labor Day and great week ahead.
