Miss Flybutter’s Birthday

Oak

It was spring when she gave birth to her children
Colour and splendour in her lap, joy abound
They grew up fast; green and glowing
Blessed by the rays of the star
When the time was right, she told them a story
A tale about a hideous monster who robs the world of its hues
Turning it white and cold

“He is not alone,” she said
“Monsters have companions too
Before the coward makes an appearance
His wife sucks all the little souls
Staining the world with her nails, yellow and red
Until they wither and fall
She’s the one who took your brothers
And sisters who came before you
I have witnessed so many children of mine
Turn pale before my eyes
And perish at my feet
Little fragments of my self swept away for ever

“Then the monster creeps in
Slowly, stealthily
The winds carry his odour
To warn me of what is to come
I prepare for the harsh battle
I can never let him win
When he comes to face me
I stand firm against him
He applies all his artillery and force
For days and days on end
Despite every blow of his
I bow not to his might
Often wounded, but never vanquished

“I’ve turned frail and old now
But hope springs eternal within me
Promise me, my children
You will be ready
You will not leave my side
Together we will trounce him and his companion
I may not bear more losses.”

The Slumberers

When seeds of darkness begin to grow
The world is quickly enveloped in a sheet of calm
Glittering, silver moonlight
Guards every window
To try and keep the stars at bay

Little children are tucked to sleep
With gentle kisses upon their cheeks
Their mums and dads follow them
Soon after into the slumberland

Pink fairies in the garden
Who danced upon the flowers
When sunshine fell upon the petals
Have also retreated to their mysterious caves

Black ants crawling below the soil
Have locked up their food in the storage
And are also seeking a small nap
Once the queen has given her permission

The gods in the heavens above
Weary of countless prayers and wishes
Have picked the clouds for a pillow
To rest their heads for a little while
Before the chores of the next day

Even the demons in the galaxy
Tired of causing chaos and disorder
Have marched back to their caves
Leaving their work for another night

All is quiet and serene
You can almost hear the stars twinkle
All the lives are recharging
For their parts in the universe
There is no good now, no evil
Neither a right way nor wrong
Only the cream of innocence reigns now
Upon the faces of the slumberers

I Am A Seed

I am a seed
Yes, only a seed
Do not be fooled by my stature
Or by these long, wavy arms
Dotted with green leaves, winged creatures and crawling critters

I may seem imposing and intimidating
Beautiful and artistic
A masterpiece of nature
But believe me when I say
I am just a seed

Deep inside this solid trunk
Is a heart that may not be visible to your eyes
But it is there and it is beating
With the same beats that beat when
I was the size of a pea
In that heart lies a voice
That tells me despite the years gone by
I am still a seed

When I close my eyes
I reflect upon the time
And experiences I have had
I remember some of them most vividly
Most of them make me smile
Yes, when I close my eyes
I forget who I really am
I become a child again
The darkness is a magical time-machine
That takes me all the way back
Before all the twigs came to be
Before all the flowers blossomed
Before I sprouted
I lose myself in those thoughts
Blurring the thin line of reality
As I contemplate about anything and everything

Lunar New Year Poem: Spring Comes Riding On A Red Dragon

When Winter refuses to tidy up
Leaving her white blanket
Sprawling as far as the eye can see

Mother Nature must pull her ears
Give her a proper scolding and
Let her know that playtime’s over

Take your snowflakes and your ice
And all your other frigid friends
And be off to sleep

Be kind now and let your sister, Spring
Have her fun too
She’s been waiting patiently for months

Spring makes her way to the ground
Riding on a fiery, red dragon
Leaving a trail of lanterns and crackers

The flowers join her party
They gather in a parade
And dance for months on end

February 6, 2023

Ah, the moon feels so close
I could snatch it from the sky
Hide it in my pocket where
Forever it will lie

The Sound Of Sunrise

The sun awoke the earth from its deep slumber
With its bright blaze radiating far and wide
Filling colours where things were once dark and grim
A sparrow left her nest on a sycamore in search for food
Leaving her three fledglings chirping incessantly
A white butterfly fluttered around in search of new friends
The bees buzzed, made honey, and discussed politics
I breathed in the morning air and watched the squirrels scurrying in the wet, green grass

The Storm Shows Us

The storm shows us who we are
Small, helpless
Most days we are blessed
When the nature is quiet
Silent, sleeping
That the sea is calm
That the wind is soft

When she decides to put on a show
For whatever reason
We witness our impotency, our powerlessness
Scurrying for our lives
Like animals in the wild chased by a predator
Screaming, hoping
No possession is valuable
But our breaths and family
All our successes and failures
Struggles and pains
Joys and ambitions
Are put into perspective
Nothing matters
The storm shows us who we are
