You Taught Me

You taught me how to speak and talk
You taught me how to be
You taught me how to run and walk
You taught me who is me

You taught me how to earn my bread
The strength of a human mind
You taught me what to take ahead
And what to leave behind

You taught me how to keep my faith
Find hope in the heavens above
You taught me how to wipe out hate
Put all my trust in love

You taught me how must one transact
You taught me discipline
You taught me how I must react
In failure and in win

You taught me how to see the rain
How to feel it with my eyes
You taught me how to bear my pain
You taught me sacrifice

You taught me what is right and real
You taught me what to give
You taught me how to breathe and feel
You taught me how to live

  1. As a retired teacher, I read this with my teacher ears imagining a former student saying those things about me. But, it left me breathless and feeling a little overwhelmed. Then I read it as a mother, imagining my son or daughter writing those things about me. Again, I was left feeling inadequate. Finally I read it as a child of God… and sure enough, I could imagine myself writing it to Him.

  2. So nice.
We weren’t born with knowledge neither were we born with skill.
All that we know, we learned.
When we appreciate the little that we have learned, we are open to the fact that there’s much more to learn and so we keep learning.
    It pays to be grateful.
    Very well written post!
