If I was a dragon

I’d wake up in the morning

Spit fire and give a warning

Get ready and then get dressed

To abduct a helpless princess

It would be so much fun

If I was a dragon

If I was a dragon

I’d fly round and round

Jump a 100 feet off the ground

Brag about my shiny tail

To a lizard and a snail

It would be so much fun

If I was a dragon

…

If I was a dragon

I’d fly away with my wings

Where lives the king of kings

I’d laugh at his empire

And set it on fire

It would be so much fun

If I was a dragon

…

If I was a dragon

I’d abduct the beautiful princess

Cause the kingdom much distress

Take her to my cave

Ask her to behave

It would be so much fun

If I was a dragon

If I was a dragon

It would be so much fun

Thinking of what I’ve done

A hero would come to my cave

To show that he is strong and brave

If I was a dragon

…

If I was a dragon

I’d fight the stupid hero

He’d throw his sword and arrow

But I’d blow them up in flames

As if it were a game

It would be so much fun

If I was a dragon

…

If I was a dragon

Suddenly I’d stop spitting fire

Some power the hero would acquire

He’d kill me and create a mess

Rescue the crying princess

I’d be wrongly undone

If I was a dragon

…

If I was a dragon

The hero would stand on my stomach

Talk about his bravery and luck

Put a sword to my chest

Say it was for the best

It wouldn’t be so much fun

If I was a dragon

…

If I was a dragon

They’d write tales about our fight

Celebrate day and night

Call me a villain

For all that I have done

If I was a dragon

…

So if I had to choose someone

Though it would be a lot of fun

I would never pick a dragon

  2. If I was a dragon, I’ll burn up Antarctica, melt the ice and supply water to the dry lands and country’s that don’t have enough water through scientific and practical means🔥💦

  8. The beauty of this poem, Frank, is the way you use the recurring statement to make a musical effect. I loved the way it was written. I loved the way it turned from mischievous dragon to the one that’s at the mercy of the prince.

  17. I like this poem. It is fun and playful, the simple rhyme rollicks along at a fair old clip which adds to the knowingly naive tone. However, I am left with the thought that we have no choice, we are all dragons waiting to be slain.

I did enjoy the poem and it reminded me that every morally centred monster- which dragons most certainly are- must be looking for a personal Saint George to free them from the burden of their appetites. As G.K. Chesterton said, “Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.” But I would still love to be a dragon…
